Construction Inclusion Coalition (CIC) celebrates first year and calls for more support from the industry
At Ibstock, WE ARE proud to be a founding member of the Construction Inclusion Coalition (CIC). This important group is working to make the construction industry more inclusive and welcoming for everyone. One year after the launch of the CIC, the movement is gaining strength, and CIC Chair Angela Rushforth is encouraging more leaders in construction to join the cause.
To mark National Inclusion Week 2024, the CIC has released its first Impact Report. This report shares the progress made by companies, including Ibstock, that have committed to the Built on Better pledge. It shows how WE ARE working to improve equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) in construction.
Why inclusion matters in construction
The construction industry has long faced challenges in creating a culture that embraces diversity and supports all workers. The CIC was created to tackle these issues and help the sector make real improvements. More than 40 companies, including Travis Perkins, Wavin, BAXI and Wolseley, have joined the CIC to create a more inclusive environment where everyone can succeed.
Key achievements in the CIC’s first year
The Impact Report highlights some of the important steps the CIC has taken during its first year, including:
A number of Coalition partners successfully ensuring that recruitment panels and candidate shortlists are more diverse
Coalition members launching a range of forums to discuss female focused issues
The introduction of new policies designed to address female focused issues
A range of stand-out initiatives to provide a better understanding of different minority groups and their perspectives.
A call for more support from the industry
Angela Rushforth says:
“We’ve made good progress over the past year, but we need more leaders to step up and join us in improving equality, diversity, and inclusion in construction. The future of our industry depends on creating a more welcoming environment for everyone.” She adds, “This isn’t just about improving the representation of women or minority groups. It’s about making sure construction is accessible to everyone, which is essential for the future of the industry. Leaders in construction need to be allies and actively support these changes.”
As National Inclusion Week 2024 focuses on the theme "Impact Matters," the CIC’s first Impact Report reminds us of the progress made so far and highlights the need for more action.
What’s next for the CIC?
In the coming year, the CIC will continue to expand its efforts by creating more opportunities for companies to connect, share resources and develop a strategy to make an even bigger impact. A major event will be the Coalition in Conversation Conference on Tuesday, 1st October, sponsored by NMBS. This will be the CIC’s biggest event yet, bringing together industry professionals to discuss ways to improve ED&I in construction.
The CIC encourages all construction businesses, no matter their size, to sign the Built on Better pledge and become part of this movement. By working together, we can create positive change and ensure the construction industry is open and inclusive to all.
Join Ibstock in supporting the Construction Inclusion Coalition
