Brick Factory Tour

An Introduction to Brickwork

Duration: 1 hour (RIBA approved)
This presentation has been designed to provide information on the basic principles of brickwork for those new to specifying brickwork, or for those requiring a ‘back to basics’ refresher. The presentation addresses different techniques of manufacturing bricks to provide a variety of finishes and appearances. Durability, mortar and the importance of setting out to brick dimensions are covered, along with an overview of DPC’s, basic principles of movement and also the use of special shapes. It concludes with a look at some of the innovations in clay that Ibstock has to offer.

An Introduction to Rail Products

Duration: 45 minutes
This CPD covers the full range of Network Rail approved C/1 troughing along with all of the ancillary components we can offer. It also looks at the innovations we are currently working on within the rail supply chain including low carbon concrete.

An Introduction to Structural Products

Duration: 45 minutes
This CPD covers the three main Retaining wall products offered – Stepoc, Slopeloc & Keystone. It provides information on each of the systems, the way they can be used and case studies of previous projects. The CPD also covers the bespoke precast options available.

Achieving Quality Brickwork

Duration: 1 hour (RIBA approved)
Achieving Quality Brickwork looks in detail at the requirements of relevant Codes of Practice and their implementation in the construction of the cavity wall. Both good and bad examples of cavity walling will be shown to illustrate the need to properly supervise brickwork during construction.

Carbon Conscious Design

Duration: 1 hour
Our Carbon Conscious seminar covers the impact design choices can have on the UK’s built environment landscape. And, we’ll help you understand how these can be explored to improve the viability of specifying sustainable materials that can contribute to Net Zero and ESG. Here’s an overview of what you’ll learn:
  • Sustainable choices – re-thinking preconceptions about today’s building materials
  • About bricks – how the humble clay brick can deliver on inspiring (and sustainable) design briefs
  • Embodied carbon: exploring how bricks compare to other building materials
  • The value of transparency of product information and manufacturer data
  • What you can do to drive more balanced approaches to specification

Designing for Movement

Duration: 1 hour (RIBA approved)
This seminar looks at the essential considerations that must be given to brickwork to accommodate movement – the largest contributor being expansion and contraction due to changes in temperature. How this movement is accommodated, together with materials for movement joint fillers and sealants, is discussed with illustrations of both good and poor examples.

Durability of Brickwork

Duration: 1 hour (RIBA approved)
The presentation outlines the key design considerations and applicable criteria to maintain long-term durability and satisfactory appearance of brickwork. It looks at exposure, British Standards, correct brick selection, mortars, jointing etc, together with the necessary detailing of DPCs, cavity trays, parapets and copings to produce durable brickwork.

Innovations in Brickwork

Duration: 1 hour
This presentation is designed to provide information on the innovative products that Ibstock has introduced, providing details not only on what benefits the innovations can offer specifiers and their clients, but also how they can be used in practice.

Glass Reinforced Concrete Technology – Engineered panels for advanced construction

Duration: 1 hour
This CPD presentation has been designed to provide information on the basic principles of our Glass Reinforced Concrete Technology. This technically focused seminar considers the features and benefits of GRC as a material for creating engineered panels for advanced MMC.
The presentation addresses a number of topics with respects to the A1 fire rating, innovative prefabricated brick faced solutions and environmentally friendly composition of Glass Reinforced Concrete, which benefits construction programmes and delivers design statements.
Email [email protected] to book your slot and learn about GRC’s Designability, Buildability, Sustainability and Reliability.

Nexus – Brick Slip Soffits

Duration: 1 hour
This CPD aims to provide information on Ibstock’s Nexus range, an offsite manufactured, brick slip soffit system. We will take you through the creation and development of Nexus, highlighting the product components, the rigorous testing regime and certification process, installation and legislation requirements – specifically changes to Approved Document B (ADB). This will assist you in a greater understanding of the design implication for your project and also specification requirements.

MechSlip

Duration: 1 hour
This CPD presentation has been designed to provide information on the basic principles of the MechSlip rain screen cladding system. This technically focused seminar considers the features and benefits of a lightweight mechanically fixed brick cladding system as a modern method of constructing a brick façade.
The presentation addresses a multitude of topics with respects to the A1 and BBA approved system; highlighting the design flexibility, detailing and aesthetics that can be achieved; technical properties and product components; the rigorous testing and performance for certification; the principles of installation and legislation compliance.
It concludes with an overview of some of the projects and innovations in MechSlip that Ibstock has to offer.

Brick Factory Tour

(RIBA approved)
In addition to the above CPD Seminars, factory tours are available:
Ibstock has 19 clay factories nationwide and the tour, which can be held at any factory, follows the manufacturing process from start to finish.
Within the group a variety of processes can be seen ranging from traditional hand-making and clamp firing through to extruding bricks and the latest tunnel kilns.
Book your tour.
