Chryston Community Hub
In the heart of Chryston, Lanarkshire, a new chapter in civic design unfolds - and at its core are the warm tones and refined textures of Ibstock’s Niveus and Cheddar Gold bricks. These carefully chosen brick products play a defining role in shaping the architectural identity of the Chryston Community Hub, a landmark development that unites a new primary school and health centre under a forward-thinking campus.
This progressive development was led by North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire and the new Chryston Primary School and Health Centre stands not only as a model for future integrated civic design but also as a stunning example of how considered material choice can enrich architectural expression.
Designed by Ryder Architecture, the development embraces a pavilion-style concept, where buildings are thoughtfully arranged across a landscaped park setting. This approach allows each facility to maintain its own identity while sharing central support spaces, all bathed in natural light and deeply connected to the outdoors.
The Niveus brick, with its soft buff tones and lightly textured finish, lends a calm and sophisticated character to the school’s façades. Its subtlety complements the openness and tranquillity of the surrounding parkland, enhancing the experience for young learners and visitors alike.
In contrast, the Cheddar Gold brick adds a touch of brightness. With a smooth, wirecut finish and gentle cream-yellow hue, it brings a welcoming vibrancy to key elevations. Together, these bricks form a balanced palette that reinforces the development’s civic importance while creating a comfortable feel— a perfect match for a space that supports both education and wellness.
The school and clinic retain distinct identities while benefitting from shared facilities, creating operational efficiency without compromising on experience.
Inside, the architectural ambition continues. Flexible, imaginative spaces - from climbing walls and cooking hubs to retreat areas and outdoor classrooms - respond to the diverse needs of pupils and staff. Classrooms are grouped around central activity zones to foster collaboration and innovation in learning, all within an environment designed to engage and inspire.
Head Teacher Jilly Moffat commented: “Our children have loved using the variety of spaces this building offers including our outdoor classroom, drama box, STEM area, cooking areas and MUGA. They are motivated and engaged to be in these spaces which has impacted positively on their learning. This inspiring learning space allows us to create and implement an engaging curriculum that is brought to life.”
